Who Would Love To See A Hope Live Concert Release?

Postby DaveP » Tue Sep 22, 2009 1:01 pm

I'm a huge fan of live music and love the fact that bands like Iron & Wine, Swell Season, Pearl Jam, Phish, Ratdog, Bruce Hornsby and many others have their shows recorded and available for electronic downloand.

I would love to see Hope either release at least one of the shows on a live CD or download. But would love to see several dates possible recorded and release either here or on http://www.livedownloads.com.

What do others think?

I enjoy listening to the Mazzy Star show from The Metro in Chicago and would really love to see some other shows become available. Maybe even allow recording from the SBD and available at http://www.archive.org

Hope others will chime in and give your thoughts!

Great idea, if done right; I would buy it.

I don't think a live recording would enhance her catalog significantly. Her live shows are more of a personal experience that you need to witness firsthand in order to get the full effect. She doesn't rework any of her material in a live setting so dramatically that a live recording of it would be necessary.

I'd much rather she release new records every three years or so.
and then...

I agree with Ashleigh. If we perhaps got a soundboard recording of "Courting Blues" for example I'd be cool with that, just because it's not on the record. But beyond that, I think it misses the point. You have to actually see this concert in person to "get it."

SO funny.... I was just thinking last night about a "live" release and how that would take shape (A preformance from one show? multiple shows? etc...).

I find it a little bit strange than any fan of a band would be dubious about a live release. I don't understand that at all. I mean a studio album and a live experience are apples and oranges obviously. Having seen Hope on this tour, I can tell you that the live versions of "Suzanne" or "Lose me Along the Way" are far and away superior to the studio release. "Lose me Along the Way" seemed to last forever and i never wanted it to end frankly. The refrain of that song is hypnotic and still ringing in my ears. Having said that I did not enjoy, "Feeling of Gaze" at all and I love the studio release. It did not seem to work with the effects that they were using. The songs are different live. The differences are important, sometimes beautiful and sometimes not. But as fans, I suppose that we want more (rightly or wrongly) and Hope always leaves her fans wanting more. And finally, I have to say that it seems very doubtful that Hope Sandoval would release an album every three years. I wish, but methinks no, sadly.....So one must supplement where one can. The answer is hell yes, I would love to hear an album of live recordings.

I would agree - even a live recording compilation would be great to hear some of those amazing songs in that format. I just love to hear live music and find that it has a different taste usually than the studio recordings. The KCRW show should be fun to hear, but not quite the same as performing in front of the audience.

I have a couple good boots, one Warm Inventions and 2 Mazzy Star ones that I enjoy listening to from time to time. I just hope to see someone come up with a good quality recording from this tour. I would enjoy that. Chances are someone in europe will - I hope.

At her show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg, there were some professional videographers there, and some fans asked what they were working on, they said there was going to be an official music video for "Blanchard" with live footage mixed in. So stay tuned, I guess?

Hope's live gigs are not really the kind you would watch at home on your couch to be honest. While It would be great to have a retrospective of her performances going back to her early days that would really be more of a fan service thing than much else. Some performers are better to be seen rather than documented. It's one of the reason I enjoy her shows so much in that they are deeply personal and not meant to be seen through the lens of your cell phone camera. It's very odd for some to accept that but consider it less the eccentricity of an artist and more of a true moment for a fan to really feel a performance on more than a passive level.

Good live DVD's and films are extremely rare. They are either spectacle or a document of a band or artist in top form and usually that has to be cut from various shows or plans are made in advance to document them. As many have no doubt seen, Hope doesn't exactly put on a gig that is meant to visualy blow an audience away. It's meant to be heard over seen. In that respect alone she's in the minority of performers. I'm a long time fan and I'm always grateful when she does live shows since she could easily decide to only be a studio musician and just release albums.

Who knows maybe years from now Hope will want to pour through whatever footage exists and put something out. A live album would be nice but again it would have to be something really stand out like say the gigs live music fans saw on Sessions at West 54th St. or Austin City Limits. Now THOSE were beautifully filmed and edited live shows. Would have been amazing to see Hope on something like that.

Though as a a fan I'd happily settle for say one of those iTunes Essentials interviews/live performances some artists do now and then. PJ Harvey did a great one way back when.
