Hi.

I would like to know the interpretations of the songs, not the lyrics, but, like, Trouble... what do you all think that song is about?

"Trouble" is about...the trouble (apparently).

At least that's what I'm getting from it. I've yet to discern exactly what "the trouble" in the song is alluding to...
and then...

I'd most like to know the inspiration behind the Suzanne b-side "I'd Thought You'd Fall For Me".

It's probably the most haunting thing she's ever put her voice to. It's definitely coming from somewhere else..
and then...

I love "I THOUGHT YOU'D FALL FOR ME"! I want to know all what she's saying in that song. I can't make out all that she says, but I get the gist, I guess.

And I also love as much as I love "I THOUGHT YOU'D FALL FOR ME," the one that begins "Saw you on the high street..." I can listen to that one over and over again and never tire of it.

I love how "I Thought You'd Fall For Me" kicks-off with the words, "I thought I'd fall for you...".

But, yes.... that is one of my favorite solo tracks of Hope's. I also really like "Friend Of Smiles", too. That whole "Suzanne" EP is to die for!

I don't know the meaning behind, "Trouble".... but it just sounds like a song about "trouble", oddly enough!

I was thinking "the trouble" referred to a wife or something; my sister and I were trying to figure it out and I wanted to know what others thought.

I am glad to see people responded. Thanks.

Yes, that Suzanne EP, nothing, not even other artists' whole records can compete with that. It's the best!

Yeah... a general trouble with a relationship" type song. At least that's what I get from it.

The "Suzanne" EP sometimes gets a constant play rotation in my car. I live in Los Angeles and, if you know anything about traffic out here, you know you can be in your car a very long time - relatively speaking with regard to the mileage you're attempting to cover. I just keep listneing to the EP over and over again and it never gets tired.

Hey folks,

I reckon Trouble is about getting old. "The Trouble is, the trouble is me" or something to that effect. Hope's 43 now and pushing on (like the rest of us on this site I'd wager), the album seems darker, much more introspective, less love tunes or tunes about her environment like Butterfly mornings. Take Wild Roses for example, Trouble, Fall Aside. I reckon getting old drives a lot of the album.

(Mind you, and this is purely out of curiousity, does Hope have any kids?)

I was wondering, too, if Hope had children.

I like Hungry Horse's interpretation. In Wild Roses I thought she was saying "Suddenly I'm old here.." but other sites have different lyrics, so I guess I'm wrong.

"I Thought You'd Fall For Me" is.... something that I can not describe with words how its feels and makes me feel, nor where it takes me to, it's just way beyond, like pretty much everything that she has been a part of, and her musicians, too. The organ (?) and the drumming and her glockenspiel and everything else, it's really makes me completely flutter...

But what about "Down The Steps," everyone? What are you feelings about that song? It's definitely one of my favorites.

Agree with you also about "I Thought You'd Fall For Me"

It's otherworldly.

mmm... yes... that song is just, ugh, I never seem to be able to form the words when trying to describe my feelings about my experiences listening to them ("the songs" I will refer to HS&TWI/MS music as)... I can't help but to sing and hum and croon with the instruments on that song, especially at the end, I guess I realize that I do that with most of the songs, I can't help it, so gorgeous... but ya, "wake up... make us some tea" gives me chills even typing it... Reminds me of driving on the 13 freeway by Berkeley in the hills near the huge trees, big fat raindrops splooshing on the windshield... Atmospheric to a fault, though "fault" may be a faulty use of the word... I wonder who or what inspired that song?

On a Mazzy Star note: I wonder what situation is being illustrated upon in "Under My Car?"

I remembering hearing Down the Steps and saying, "I must have it!" That song and I Thought You'd Fall For Me and the one she says, "I'm gonna spend all my money, making you cry..." -- HOW she says "cry" gets to me every time -- these songs make me, I don't, know what, they make me feel a certain way, like I have a lover, but I'm single... LOL... if that makes sense. This feeling just comes over me...hard to explain.

DOWN THE STEPS isn't on iTunes, though, so every time I want to hear it I have to go to YouTube. I need it on my ipod Touch now!!!!!

Oh and BLUE BIRD, on the new album, some lyrics site has that she is saying, "Should I just laugh, or pretend that you were never clear..." If she is saying "LAUGH" I love the way she says it and I love that she says it (if that is what she's saying).

And in I THOUGHT YOU'D FALL FOR ME I love the part, "I feel unhappy now that I'm...." -- I thought she was saying "now that I'm over you..." but listening to it today, right now, I hear "Now that I know you" or "love you"

Her voice is so addictive, she could saying gibberish and I'd still love it, but I just like to see what other people think.
