Pre-show "house music"

Postby Scarecrow » Thu Oct 08, 2009 9:57 pm

OK, I am really really intrigued by this now. But I've never been to a show where the performer actually programs the pre-show music.

I am pretty sure it's Hope and possibly Colm programming the playlist. But having been to two shows from the tour, I'm really just floored by how they subtly have decided to "expose" their fans to such great music, not only from themselves but from some of their favorite bands. So I've decided to start this thread to see if we can figure out as many songs that are in the playlist as possible. Here's what I've been able to figure out so far (Thanks to the help of some others, including razorboy):

Rolling Stones - Still a Fool (first music that starts playing when the doors to the theater open and crowd starts filing in)
Willie Nelson - Blue Skies
Ultimate Spinach - Mind Flowers
Bill Fay - Dust Filled Room
Dirt Blue Gene - Your Junk (they open their set with this song too but this is the recorded version, you can hear it on their myspace...so badass)
The Kinks - Big Sky
Green on Red - Hair & Skin
Derek & The Dominoes - Bell Bottom Blues
Jefferson Airplane - Today
Rod Stewart - Only a Hobo
Alice Coltrane - Shiva-Loka (music that plays as lights dim and Hope and the band take the stage)
Johnny Cash - We'll Meet Again (music that plays after Hope leaves the stage after the encore and the lights come back on)

For those of you that have attended a concert, what else do you remember playing? For those of you who are going to be attending, maybe we can try to come up with the full playlist that they have going. Not sure why I suddenly feel inspired to try and track down all of the songs on their list, but I was seriously just so blown away I think it's worth it. Plus, I guess you can consider it a nice little gift from the band to us.

Since this is a low-budget live show, I'm sure they just burned a CD or two of music they like. It really could have been anyone in the band or their sound person who made the CD's for the pre-show. I wouldn't look that much into all the song choices. I'm sure its just stuff they like and thought would compliment their own show. Not a big deal.

Hope & Colm choose the music. I'll see if I can get a full tracklist from them.

I was at the Austin show on Sunday and I think we also heard Your Time is Gonna Come by Led Zeppelin.
A complete tracklist would be really cool :)

I noticed the playlist before the show to be really excellent, too. It was when I heard Christiansand from Tricky's Pre-Mellenium Tension that I really perked up. Also not on the list was a Beach Boys song (circa Surfer Girl) that I couldn't place the name of.

Don't Forget one of the most moving songs of all time...

"The New Soft Shoe" by Gram Parsons w/Emmylou Harris & Elvis's touring band from the album GP. That song is probably my favorite Gram Parson's song . It's simply amazing, & when I heard it at the October 16th Atlanta Show, I got really curious about who was choosing the pre-show song list. If it is indeed Colm & Hope, then I will say they have magnificent taste in the music they appreciate, as well as create.

Along with Gram, Willie & Cash, etc., It's good to see that they appreciate some older/legitimate country music. I always thought Hope could do very well with that style. It seems like she dabbled in it a bit on Among my Swan, with "Cry, Cry" & "I've been Let Down." I always thought it would be cool if she explored it a bit further. Maybe on the next Warm Inventions album?

I live in Chattanooga, Tennessee so I am a bit biased, But I would love it if she cut a track or two in Nashville at some point in one of the older studios. Hope & the Warm Inventions, plus one or 2 Nashville Cats!I think pedal steel guitar would sound really neat one of their albums. At the very least, she should grace the Opry with her presence and do a set at the Ryman Auditorium. I'd be there with bells on.

I'm probably getting ahead of myself here. And I don't want to sound like I am downplaying the two absolute gems She & the band have provided us with in the form of Bavarian Fruit Bread & Through the Devils Softly. Believe me I'm not. I haven't been able to go more than 3-4 days without listening to TTDS since it came out & I think the maximum amount of time I went without listening to BFB over the last 7.5 years is maybe, 15 days. And I have a lot of music to choose from when making my listening choices.

Which leads back to the original topic of pre-show music mix.

I was also pleased to hear Led Zeppelin's "That's the Way" & "Todd Rundgren's "I saw the Light." Oh & how could I almost forget the "Minneapolis Blood on the Tracks Sessions/Version" of Bob Dylan's "You're a Big Girl Now" Yeah, Hope & Colm hit a lot of my favorites. We've got some kind of kindred spiritual element. I really felt like this could have been one of my own mix CD's.
